The students have been working hard to collect information about their favourite physical characteristics of Squamish, natural places not made by humans. We have learned how to use pic collage (an app on the ipads) to create small posters for our class room map. The students chose an image that best showed of the place they selected and then added the information they had gathered in their own words. We uploaded some of our images to the Canada map on "A Kids Guide To Canada" and shared on twitter @bethsmithsd48.
In pairs students chose places in Squamish that they thought were important. It had to be a place in nature and not man-made. The pairs picked a place and used the ipads to research information. They had to select information that they felt was important and that other people would want to know. We talked about easy to use search engines and how to scan for information. We talked about finding information online and how much we can trust it. We used "kiddle" to help us find information and images.
As a class we have been talking about our town and what makes it special. We discussed the different characteristics that make up a place. Physical characteristics, human characteristics and cultural characteristics. Once we understood what these were we focused on physical characteristics to start. We discussed what is in Squamish that was not put there by people. The natural features of our environment. Using the ipads we looked for images that showed the physical characteristics that we love. We shared the images that we found in padlet.
Last year I applied to be part of a provincial project about communication. Through this project I have been supplied with technology that will be used to support my teaching and the student's learning around communication. As a class we will be using the technology to create connections across Canada with other elementary schools to share our culture and community. This is linked to a national project marking Canada 150 plus. Children will share, connect and build inter-cultural understanding, empathy and respect. We will be using a variety of digital tools to explore and share our knowledge of the area that we live in. Our project is called "A Kids Guide To Canada".
