The Name Jar (Part 1)
After thinking about what we loved about the outside of us, we have beginning to think about other things that make us unique. We read the book "The Name Jar" by Yangsook Choi. The story is about being the new kid at school. Being the new kid in school is hard enough, but what about when nobody can pronounce your name? Instead of introducing herself on the first day of school, she tells the class that she will choose a name by the following week. Her new classmates are fascinated by this no-name girl and decide to help out by filling a glass jar with names for her to pick from. But while Unhei practices being a Suzy, Laura, or Amanda, one of her classmates comes to her neighborhood and discovers her real name and its special meaning.
The students talked with their parents about where their name came from, found out what it meant and explained why they liked it. We created art work containing our names and images that represented things we loved. Using Laptops we typed up information about our names, choosing fonts and borders.
